|
| As part of the statewide effort to reduce and prevent tobacco use among youth, the department provides non-competitive grant funding to schools, professional development and technical assistance to school faculty and staff around tobacco use prevention and cessation curriculum and makes curricular resources available on loan through the Health Education Resource Center. The funds to schools, which are appropriated annually by the Vermont Legislature, target four primary goals:
- Coordination of tobacco prevention efforts;
- Provision of evidence-based tobacco prevention education;
- Development and implementation of model tobacco policy; and
- Involvement of families and community in supporting school-based tobacco prevention initiatives.

Vermont Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) for 2009
Every two years since 1993, the Department of Health's Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs and the department have sponsored the Vermont Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The YRBS measures the prevalence of behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death, disease and injury among youth. The YRBS is part of a larger effort to help communities increase the “resiliency” of young people by reducing high risk behaviors and promoting healthy behaviors. View links to additional reports for 1995 through 2007.
Vermont 2006 Youth Health Survey (PDF)

Middle schools were defined as containing any of grades 6-8. High schools were defined as containing any of grades 9-12.
