ALCOHOL, TOBACCO AND OTHER DRUG (ATOD) PREVENTION
(Updated 11/6/08)

OVERVIEW
""

Through the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) Prevention programs, the department provides grant funding, professional development, and technical assistance to support comprehensive prevention efforts in schools. Schools implement curricula, policies, peer leadership, intervention, and referral services to promote student resiliency and reduce risky behaviors. ATOD Prevention programs include:

Safe & Drug Free Schools & Communities (SDFSC)
Title IV, Part A, Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities is one of five titles in the Consolidated Federal Grants Programs to schools. The Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities (SDFSC) program is the only source of federal funding for school based prevention that directly targets all of America 's youth in grades K-12 with drug education, prevention and intervention services. These funds are managed and monitored by the Vermont Department of Education. Schools apply for these funds through their supervisory unions and school districts. Department staff provide school staff with information, technical assistance, evaluation and oversight of grant requests and spending in compliance with the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.

School-based Drug & Alcohol Prevention Education & Legislation
The department provides training resources and support to pre-service educators and school personnel on issues concerning the prevention and abuse of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

Tobacco Use Prevention (Updated 11/6/08)
As part of the statewide effort to reduce and prevent tobacco use among youth, the department provides non-competitive grant funding to schools, professional development and technical assistance to school faculty and staff around tobacco use prevention and cessation curriculum and makes curricular resources available on loan through the Health Education Resource Center.
