VERMONT YOUTH HIV PREVENTION NEEDS ASSESSMENT PROJECT REPORTS

   
The summary report compiled data gathered through three separate phases which examined HIV prevention risks, education, resources and services as well as challenges to effective HIV prevention and suggestions for improvement for the youth population.     This document outlines results of the first phase of a three-part research project to examine the HIV-prevention education needs of Vermont youth who are not in school. Information was gathered through interviews with 118 Vermont-based providers who work with out-of-school youth and with five youth focus groups from around the state.

    In this second phase of the project, which focused on HIV prevention education needs of youth in alternative educational settings, interviews were conducted with administrators and educators from technical centers, independent schools, state-operated facilities and state-approved programs. This report includes findings in health curriculum, HIV/AIDS education or information, HIV/AIDS-related services, health promotion for youth, resources needed for improving HIV/AIDS education and school and community coordination.

    In the third phase of this project, which focused on HIV prevention education needs of youth in traditional educational settings, interviews were conducted with health educators from 29 public schools across Vermont. In addition to interviews with health educators, this report includes information gathered through six focus groups conducted with youth in public schools in central and southern Vermont. The report includes findings in health curriculum, HIV/AIDS education or information, specific units on HIV/AIDS, integration into other subjects, HIV/AIDS related services, HIV policy, and school/community coordination.
