OVERVIEW
 |
| |
|
| |
Mathematics education in Vermont is currently centered on the Mathematics Grade Expectations (GEs). Mathematics GEs are organized into five areas: arithmetic, number and operations; geometry and measurement; functions and algebra; and data, statistics and probability; and mathematical problem solving and reasoning. Like the Grade Expectations in other content areas, the Mathematics Grade Expectations are more specific statements of the Vermont standards in Vermont Framework of Standards & Learning Opportunities.

Current Initiatives:
- Mathematics and Science Partnership (MSP) Grant Program
The goals of the MSP are: 1) to increase the academic achievement of students in mathematics and science by enhancing the content knowledge and teaching skills of classroom teachers; 2) to build statewide capacity for professional development of K-12 staff by establishing networks of highly skilled teacher leaders in mathematics and science; and 3) to develop partnerships among K-12 educators, STEM faculty, and higher education personnel. Funds from the MSP are currently being used to support high quality professional development programs in Vermont. Three-year MSP projects funded for 2009-2010 include:

Common Core Standards for Mathematics & English Language Arts FAQ (Updated 8/4/10)
The department has been receiving many questions about the newly finalized Common Core State Standards (CC). These questions have been compiled into a FAQ document with the information that is known at this time. This update provides a new timeline for the adoption of the Common Core State Standards and additional information about the impact of the CC on curriculum and our current assessments. Additions are highlighted in "purple". |

Calendar of Events: NECAP 2010 Reading, Writing & Mathematics Test Administration Window
The administration window for this year’s New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) Reading, Writing and Mathematics tests is October 1-22, 2010. All Vermont students in grades 3 through 8 and 11, including publicly funded students attending private independent schools, should participate unless a student qualifies for alternate assessment or an exemption for medical reasons, family emergency or personal crisis. Each school is responsible for creating its own testing schedule but should consider religious holidays and/or local events that may impact students’ ability to participate. Schools should plan make-up test sessions toward the end of the administration window for students who miss testing for any reason. Please have all assessment materials packed and ready for UPS pick-up on Monday, October 25, 2010 at 8:00 a.m. NOTE: For planning purposes, the NECAP Science test administration for grades 4, 8 and 11 will be May 9-26, 2011 with materials picked up on Friday, May 27, 2011.
- Calendar of Events: Test Administration Workshops
Two half-day, face-to-face workshops for building test coordinators will be offered on September 16 (in Colchester) and 17 (in Killington). The workshop will provide the details associated with the administration of the grades 3 through 8 and 11 NECAP tests. Participants will also be provided with updates and given an opportunity to ask questions. Click on either of the two workshop offerings below for times and a direct link to the workshop registration page (that includes a workshop description, map and driving directions):
- September 16 (Colchester, VT)
- September 17 (Killington, VT)
- NOTE 1: You will be asked to provide basic contact information. Once all required fields have been completed, click on “Register”. You will then see a confirmation page. Please print this confirmation page, as it is the only confirmation you will receive.
- NOTE 2: Registration for face-to-face workshops begins one half-hour prior to the listed start time.
- Calendar of Events: Test Accommodations for Grade 11 Students (NimbleTools)

The NECAP states (New Hampshire, Vermont, and Rhode Island) are continuing research and development work with Nimble Assessment Systems and Measured Progress to incorporate the use of the accessible computer-based test system (NimbleTools) into the fall 2010 NECAP testing for Grade 11 students in the content areas of reading and mathematics. If your school is interested in allowing students to use NimbleTools to take the grade 11 mathematics or reading NECAP assessments, your school technology coordinator and test administrator MUST attend a mandatory training session. Use the link above for additional information; view the calendar of events for training location and registration.

Surveys of Enacted Curriculum (SEC) Facilitator Toolkit
The SEC are practical, efficient tools for obtaining classroom data about math, science or literacy teaching. Online surveys completed by teachers produce visual maps of instruction that can be compared to the Vermont Grade Expectations. The surveys can also provide instructional data to investigate in relation to NECAP results. The following materials are provided to help facilitators develop understanding of the Survey content, levels of cognitive complexity, and data analysis:
- Instructions for Viewing Data

Step-by-step instructions for viewing instructional practice charts, instructional content charts, standards and assessments, and teacher data.
- Survey "How To" Guide

View instructions for registering, returning to an incomplete survey, participating in another content area survey, taking a post-SEC survey, what to do if you forget your user name and password.
